DIALOGUE WITH A STONE
Kaus Australis • Rotterdam / The Netherlands • 2017
Dialogue with a Stone was developed in the context of Katherina Heil’s residency at Stichting Kaus Australis, Rotterdam (NL), where it was presented as a room installation accompanied by a publication.
The work investigates the intersections between subject and object, where fragmented narratives emerge through direct responses to materials and objects. At its core, the installation unfolds as a spatial constellation: a large, map-like topographic drawing—constructed as a series of thought-images—enters into dialogue with shifting arrangements of sculptures, assemblages, and found objects.
Within this setup, questions arise about relation and perception: How can a sculpture become a form of dialogue? Are there rules that determine how things are placed in relation to one another? What defines the duration of a moment, and when is an object truly separate from another?
In Dialogue with a Stone, time, space, form, body, and language continuously shift into one another. Language becomes drawing, becomes object, and remains in a state of transformation—simultaneously written, interpretable, and materially charged, released and reactivated through its encounter with the surrounding objects.
The installation was accompanied by a publication produced in relation to the residency at Kaus Australis, which documents and extends the work presented in the space. It was made possible with the generous support of the Mondriaan Fund, Amsterdam.
