TIME OUT OF MIND

Billytown-Whatspace • The Hague / The Netherlands • 2016

Billytown has opened their latest exhibition ‘Time Out of Mind’, which is a collaboration between artist run gallery Billytown and Whatspace. Whatspace is a nomadic independent platform for contemporary art, founded by Koen Delaere and Bas van den Hurk in 2008.

Billytown is a hybrid space for art, which combines the commercial side of running a gallery with the identity of an artist initiative. Producing and exhibiting artworks from under one roof. The Kitchen is a project space with a more process-oriented character and a small flexible programming.

Whatspace started with the assumption that any space, plus art, plus beer could mean the beginning of ‘something’. They organise themselves from the perspective of the artist, and aim to work from an equal standpoint. Billytown identifies with this inspiring method and is therefore pleased to offer them a platform in the gallery.

‘Time out of Mind’ refers to the 30th album by Bob Dylan. This comeback album is characterized by a spacious atmosphere. For this we can acknowledge Daniel Lavois who produced the record. He worked with a strategical method of mixing and carefully placed microphones, which were scattered around his studio. This type of recording let you experience the entire room. Whatspace invited Jeroen Doorenweerd to curate the exhibition and translate the sound of the album to a spatial experience.
