This Is One Landscape, Divided

17.2.2023 – 08.04.2023
with works by Meta Drčar, Katherina Heil, Jiajia Qi

Opening: February 17, 2023 | 7 – 10 PM

The exhibition This Is One Landscape, Divided features works by Meta Drčar (SI), Katherina Heil (DE), and Jiajia Qi (CN), binding themes together in spatial installations to think critically about each work representing a different artistic character within the same focus.
For their exhibition at Billytown, the three artists developed installation pieces to investigate how the body responds to the various factors of the built environment and challenges how the viewer experiences a particular spatial situation. Through (sculptural) installations that assume the liminal space between the constructed/non-constructed, ephemeral/long-lasting, the artists question how our perception relates to the movement and transitory nature of any given set of conditions.

SENSORY THRESHOLD LAB – HOLY GRID!
at Billytown The Hague, NL
and Sala de Espera Tijuana, MEX

holy grid! sensory threshold lab katherina heil alexander johannes heil billytown the hague

"Architecture is all about serial production. It is already evident in the repetition of elements in ancient temples. Greek temples, for instance, entail several handmade yet serial parts like their columns arranged according to a homogeneous grid. With the industrial revolution, machines took over more and more stages of production. This applies to architectural elements in the same way it applies to a vast number of other products. Many of them, cars for instance, create landscapes of cars. Stored on huge parking lots of the factories, they are waiting to be shipped throughout the world. The ornamentation of the products became more and more subtle, changed, or disappeared entirely. Especially complex ornaments were complicated to manufacture within the factories of the ‘Fordian Revolution’. With the automated serial production of things, the products themselves became sorts of ornaments, arranged in grid patterns like the cars mentioned above, the tiles on your kitchen floor, the windows on the other side of the street, the pavement of the sidewalk you are walking on, the bricks of the building's wall next to you. Now visible in the foreground of our industrially produced world, the grid became an ornament itself, as you can see in this building. But grids do not solely dominate our built environment. They facilitate and rule cyberspace, our communication technologies, and emerge as models as we dive deeper and gain better understanding of how our brain constructs our reality."

The ST LAB 2022 will take place from August 12th to September 23rd at the gallery of Billytown in The Hague. As in the previous ST LABs the space will be organically transformed into an unforeseen universe, emerged out of the collaboration of the participants.

Sensory Threshold LAB 2021 - OHRIVERSUM
A project initiated by Katherina Heil in collaboration with Alexander Heil and Rik Möhlmann at De Fabriek Eindhoven.

‘As a particle of the atmosphere is never lost, so sound is never lost. A strain of music or a simple tone will vibrate in the air forever and ever, decreasing according to a fixed ratio. The diffusion of the agitation extends in all directions, like the waves in a pool, but the ear is unable to detect it beyond a certain point. It is well known that some individuals can distinguish sounds which to others under precisely similar circumstances are wholly lost. Thus the fault is not in the sound itself, but in our organ of hearing, and a tone once in existence is always in existence.’ [Florence McLandburgh The Automaton Ear 1876]

I am walking on the beach. The wind swirls around my body. The waves wash the shore, crashing onto the land in an endless phasing repetition, creating an oscillating swell of noise. I encounter a sea shell. I lift it towards my ear – a maze of sound reveals itself to me. We live immersed in a world of sound. However, most of the sounds are filtered out by the shape of our ear.
With this project we want to include ourselves deeply within this world, which extends beyond our daily experience. And thus we began our intuitive search for the relations between the ear, its form, and the resulting sound experience. Eventually, all human ears are built using the same blueprint. Nevertheless, every ear is uniquely shaped like a fingerprint and thus influences our subjective acoustic experience of the world. One could say, that listening beings all together live in their subjective sonic worlds. Therefore, we invented the concept of the Ohriversum (German ‘Ear-verse’) in which the entirety of all listening beings establishes a spatial constellation of these individual worlds.

‘Ohriversum’ takes place as part of the ‘Sensory Threshold LAB’. A group of artists exploring the inaudible dimensions of our reality, forming new collaborations, narratives and metaphors.

Looking at the universe as a giant body that aligns with our own body, indicates a giant intelligence in every
part of the universe, relating and functioning accordingly. Like every cell in our body is an intelligent agent,
functioning in relation to other cells and the body as a whole.
For my project Sensory Thresholds I collaborate with different artists to explore the intangible (outer-) space,
metaphysics, and nature-related themes that question, contemplate or emphasize the meanings and
deeper understandings of the human being (and mind) within the bigger context of planet and universe.

With ‘Touching a Mountain’ 2020, Katherina Heil and Rik Möhlmann explore the perception and interpretation of our cosmos,
ancient mythologies and their underlying associations through sound and imagery. The relationships between isolated experiences,
time and cosmic proportionality, as well as collected imagery and soundscapes are central in this piece.
As it unfolds, the video tells a story about interpretations and imaginations of the world, scale, space and time.

Cosmic phenomena have always been an inspiration to explore, research, imagine and create mythologies and stories in order to give meaning and context to our lives. As it unfolds, the interpretations and visualizations of the cosmos constitute spaces, give a notion of presence, communicate time. Moreover, it may trigger sensations of awareness or a shift in perspective, a mind-bending sense of placing oneself in the context of the idea of an expanding universe.

Cosmographia was initiated by Katherina Heil at the occasion of her artist in residency period at A-Dash in Athens in collaboration with Rik Möhlmann and PACTO artist collective.
